Yeah, I agree with that list of players, Santorelli is a good firecracker, I could see his type of game rallying the other Oilers.

If Purcell is to turn his game around, he should watch footage of Stephane Yelle, unsung grinder hero, good to learn from.

no idea why Fehr is still out there, unless he's still hoping for more than a 1-2 year deal.

I have seen Semin play several times and there is no way he gets on my team. I've said it quite a few times already on this site, but I'll say it again:

Alex Semin is pound for pound (he's 6'3 at least) the softest player I have ever seen in a pro jersey.

You did say that you've never seen him live, but this blog makes me question if you ever actually pay attention to other games/teams. A player on paper is MUCH different than a player on the ice.

I'm sure he has some heart and a bit of motivation. I bet he's a decent, friendly, teammate. But it's on the ice where it matters and if you've got a guy that is literally scared to go to the slot, scared to go into the corner...it's very bad for team morale.

Especially with a bunch of 20yr olds (or less) watching him back out of a 50/50 puck in the corner.

He's brutal, and won't last long at all in MTL.

There has to be consideration given to the work habits & leadership qualities of any addition to the roster.
Semin usually performs in contract years, but he's got a reputation for being soft and for thinking of himself first. So, I'm not lamenting the fact that he isn't signed with the Oil.

Even when Semin was putting up points he was frustrating coaches .Last year I don't think I had ever seen somebody more disinterested to play N.H.L hockey .

I watched him play at the PNC Arena a number of times and disinterested is an understatement. Matching him with Therrien as coach is going to be entertaining. I can see the veins bulging on his new coach's neck already.

I don't believe Henderson was talking about signing Semin specifically. I think what he was more getting at is finding veteran players that have traditionally been solid players and have had a off year and sign them to cheap deals like the contract Semin just got.

Personally I don't think Semin is a fit for this club as we probably still considered a little soft. Not to mention we already have filled out our forward group, however in future years, finding a cheap veteran is a decent idea.

You guys need an Alex semin, like a sane person needs a lobotomy.

He could not be more opposite of what your team would need moving forward.

Yeah, the Oilers could just use cheap veterans. Or they could, you know, make a decent draft pick outside the top 10? That way they have a steady stream of cheap talent? Like, I don't know, that team that just won its third cup in 6 years?

Last year Semin did not give even minimal any effort. He was weak and lazy. Definitely not a guy you want around your youngsters.
When he did get his shot off it was directly into a defender and led to a rush on the other end (which of course he would never back-check).
Semin should go to the KHL, where people will put up with his bull poop, and coaches wont bench him when he stands in the neutral zone while his team plays defense.
What a waste of talent

I think a better example for the would be Brad Richards. Same situation: was bought out and is now playing for cups as opposed to long term deals.

Someone who can contirbute on a 1 year deal but will also help develop some of the younger players like he will attempt to do this year in DET. Not Semin!

Edmonton moving forward will need at least one or two Alex Semins every year if they want to keep the team competitive while keeping as much of the core as possible.

This does not mean you need to sign Semin. It means you sign guys looking to prove them selves for a low price and hope that they over perform their prior season.

I admit I was a huge skeptic of the Semin signing. But after some reflection, I realize this can go a couple different ways . Semin has been bought out, so money is not a real motivator for him - this year.

Maybe he has something to prove to the hockey world, and to his friend Andrei Markov. He is very aware of the pressure from media and fans in Montreal., where players are adored win or tie.

Scenario 1 - he sucks. Gets sent down, or cut , fades into obscurity at the cost of a cup of coffee to the Habs.

Scenario 2 - he contributes. Gets the ice time a team starved for a pure sniper can allow, earns himself a final contract somewhere after the season ends ( THEN its buyer beware all over again )

Great blog Hendo, you did use some corsi stats so unfortunately you don't get a 10/10 but damn close.

And just a question but can the refs that banned everyone add a cricket emoticon to the list on the side? Seems appropriate now.
